What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring gas caused by the breakdown of uranium found in soil and rock. The gas radiates up to the surface and dilutes very quickly to non-toxic levels in the air. However, when radon enters your home it can build up to toxic levels dangerous to breathe.

How Do I know If I Am Affected?

Testing your home for radon is easy and inexpensive. With several different radon testing methods, taking from two days to one year to track radon levels. The most common method typically takes 3 months to produce an accurate range of exposure. If your tests exceed certain levels a mitigation system should be installed.

How to Fix the Problem

If your radon results are higher than 4 pCi/L you can take the following steps to help reduce the level of radon:

  • Ventilate the basement sub-flooring by installing a small inline air pump to draw the radon from below the concrete slab to the outside before it enters the building.
  • Increase the mechanical ventilation, via a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), to allow an exchange of air.
  • Seal all cracks and openings in foundation walls and floors, and around pipes and drains can also reduce the amount of gas entering the building.
